Glycerine (glycerol, CAS 56-81-5) is a trihydric alcohol obtained as a co-product of fat splitting, transesterification for biodiesel or by synthetic routes from propylene. Refined grades reach 99.5% to 99.7% purity and are supplied to food, pharmaceutical (USP/EP) and personal-care customers, while crude glycerine is used in technical applications. Its humectant, solvent, plasticiser and sweetening properties make it a core ingredient in cosmetics, toothpaste, food, tobacco, e-liquids, alkyd and polyester resins, explosives and antifreeze formulations.
