Isopropyl Alcohol

Isopropyl alcohol (IPA, isopropanol, propan-2-ol, CAS 67-63-0) is a colourless, flammable secondary alcohol with a mild odour and fast evaporation rate. It is miscible with water, ethanol, ether and chloroform and is an effective solvent for many resins, oils, alkaloids and gums. Commercial grades are 99.7% anhydrous, 99% and 70% aqueous. IPA is widely used as a cleaning and degreasing solvent in electronics assembly, as a process solvent and extractant in pharmaceutical and fine-chemical manufacture, as a co-solvent in coatings and printing inks, and as the active or carrier ingredient in hand sanitisers and disinfectants.
