Acetone (propanone, CAS 67-64-1) is the simplest ketone: a colourless, highly volatile, water-miscible solvent with a fast evaporation rate and excellent solvency for many resins, plastics and fats. It is produced mainly as a co-product of the cumene process for phenol. Acetone is used as a solvent in coatings, adhesives, nail-polish removers and cleaning formulations, as a reaction medium and intermediate for methyl methacrylate, bisphenol A and solvent extraction, and as a laboratory cleaning and drying agent because it dries without residue.
