Sorbitol
CAS 50-70-4 · C6H14O6 · HS 2905.44
Sorbitol (CAS 50-70-4) is a six-carbon sugar alcohol obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of glucose or dextrose syrups. It is roughly 60% as sweet as sucrose, non-cariogenic and metabolised independently of insulin, which makes it the standard polyol for sugar-free confectionery, chewing gum, oral care and diabetic foods. Industrially it is a platform chemical for vitamin C synthesis, a humectant and plasticiser in cosmetics, toothpaste and tobacco, and a cryoprotectant and stabiliser in pharmaceutical and food formulations. Commercial grades include 70% solution and crystalline powder.
