Iron Oxide Red

Coatings & Pigments

Iron oxide red (ferric oxide, Fe2O3, CAS 1309-37-1) is a synthetic inorganic pigment produced by calcination or precipitation routes, valued for excellent light fastness, weather resistance, chemical inertness and opacity at a very competitive price. It is the dominant colourant for concrete paving stones, roofing tiles, precast concrete, asphalt and construction renders, and is also used in coatings, plastics, rubber, ceramics and polishing compounds. Buyers compare Fe2O3 content, tinting strength relative to a standard, oil absorption, residue on sieve and water-soluble salts, which affect dispersion and efflorescence in cementitious systems.

Application scenarios

  • Concrete pavers and roofing tiles
  • Architectural and industrial coatings
  • Plastics and rubber colouring
  • Ceramics and glazes
  • Polishing and abrasive compounds
  • Fertiliser and feed iron supplement
